Overview
Portion is an iOS app for meal logging, nutrition estimates, goals, subscriptions, and optional Apple Health integration. We design Portion to keep confirmed meal records on your device where possible and to avoid storing raw meal content in operational logs.
Information Portion Handles
- Account information from Sign in with Apple, including your Apple account identifier and, if you choose to share it, your email address (which may be an Apple private-relay address).
- Meal information you enter or confirm, including foods, portions, calories, macros, and related notes.
- Photos or typed meal descriptions you choose to send for Smart Estimates.
- Barcode lookup inputs and product nutrition returned by Open Food Facts.
- Optional Apple Health values used for goals, such as weight, height, age, sex, active energy, and nutrition totals you choose to write back.
- Subscription status and purchase entitlement information from Superwall and Apple.
- Product analytics, such as app usage and interaction events covering onboarding, paywall, purchases, Smart Estimates, meal saves, barcode lookups, Apple Health syncing, and recipes.
- Diagnostics, including crash reports, performance data such as request timing and status codes, and other diagnostic context like app version and device model.
- A user identifier that connects your account to your synced data, subscription status, analytics, and diagnostics.
How Information Is Linked to You
When you are signed in, your email address, Apple Health-derived goal values, purchase and subscription status, synced recipes, Smart Estimate requests, product analytics, and diagnostics are associated with your account identity. Barcode lookups sent to Open Food Facts are not linked to your identity, and neither are the accuracy records described under Measuring Estimate Accuracy.
Tracking and Advertising
Portion does not use your information to track you across apps or websites owned by other companies, does not share your information with data brokers, and does not show third-party advertising.
Account and Sign in with Apple
Portion uses Sign in with Apple to create and recover your account and to associate your app data with you. When you sign in, Portion receives your Apple account identifier and, if you choose to share it, your email address, which may be an Apple private-relay address. Portion does not receive your Apple password.
Smart Estimates
If you enable Smart Estimates, Portion may send a meal photo or typed meal description to our backend so an AI provider can suggest editable nutrition details. You choose whether to confirm or discard the result.
Backend operational logs are designed to store request metadata, such as request identifiers, timing, provider/model labels, status, image byte count, or text length. They are not intended to store raw photos or confirmed meal records.
Measuring Estimate Accuracy
Portion keeps a record of text and voice Smart Estimates so we can measure how accurate they are and look into ones that come back wrong. Each record holds a de-identified version of the meal description you submitted, the nutrition figures the AI returned, and any edits you made to those figures before saving. Photos are not kept, and a photo estimate produces no such record.
The description is de-identified before it is stored. The same AI request that produces your estimate also returns a version of your description with personal details removed, and that version is what gets written down. The description as you typed or dictated it is not stored. Food and brand names are kept, because they carry the nutritional meaning of what you wrote.
These records hold no account identifier and no other link back to you. Because nothing in a record identifies whose it is, we cannot find yours, and we cannot remove a record at your request. Data held against your account can still be deleted from Settings.
Records are deleted within 90 days of being written. A small number are kept for longer: we read some records to check that the personal details really were removed, and the ones that pass are kept as reference examples for testing whether a change to our AI makes estimates better or worse. Those records hold the same de-identified description and figures as any other, and no link back to you.
Apple Health
Portion asks for Apple Health permission only when you use Health-related features. Depending on what you allow, Portion may read profile and activity values to help set editable goals, and may write confirmed nutrition totals back to Apple Health. You can change Health permissions in the Apple Health app or iOS Settings.
Local Storage and Photos
Confirmed meal records are stored on your device. If local photo retention is enabled, Portion may keep a local copy of a confirmed meal photo on your device. You can disable local photo retention in app settings.
Service Providers
Portion uses service providers to operate the app, including Supabase for backend services and access control, Superwall for subscription status and paywall delivery, Sentry for crash and error diagnostics, PostHog for product analytics, Open Food Facts for barcode nutrition lookup, and an AI provider for Smart Estimates.
These providers process information only as needed to provide their services to Portion.
Retention
Local meal data remains on your device until you delete it or uninstall the app. Backend Smart Estimate event metadata is retained for operational monitoring and abuse prevention, and is scheduled for deletion after the configured retention period. Accuracy records have their own retention period, given under Measuring Estimate Accuracy.
Your Choices
- You can use manual meal logging without uploading photos or meal descriptions for Smart Estimates.
- Smart Estimates require your explicit consent before any photo or meal description leaves your device, and you can withdraw that consent at any time in app settings.
- You can turn off the accuracy records described under Measuring Estimate Accuracy in app settings. Because those records carry no identifier, turning it off stops new ones rather than removing earlier ones.
- You can control Apple Health permissions in the Apple Health app or iOS Settings.
- You can manage subscriptions through your Apple ID subscription settings.
- You can sign out or delete your account, including backend data associated with it, from within the app under Settings.
- You can contact us for privacy questions, support, or deletion requests.
